Although the live meet only lasts during the days of the LA County Fair, Fairplex Park is also known as a venue for off-track betting from some of the other racetracks in California, including Hollywood Park, Santa Anita, and Golden Gate Field, among others.

During the rest of the year, the park is serves as one of the largest horse training centers in California, particularly thoroughbreds being trained for racing. The Fairplex Equine Center is also a popular venue for some of the best horse shows in Southern California.

The park is part of Fairplex, formerly known as the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds, and shares a home with the L.A. County Fair.

The park itself is a horse racing facility with a 5/8-mile racetrack and a grandstand offering a 10,000-person seating capacity. It also has equine training facilities, horse show facilities, and the Barretts Equine Limited auction complex.

2008 brought in a lot of action to 1101 W. McKinley Ave., as numerous five- and six-figure stake races took place here. Barretts ponied up an estimated $260,000 for back-to-back events on Sept. 13 and 14.
